What is a Loctite product?

In the automotive, transportation, industrial, maintenance and everyday life sectors, Loctite products are renowned for their strength, durability and reliability. Loctite, part of the HENKEL Group, offers a variety of solutions for bonding, fastening, sealing and gasketing of flat and threaded parts.

What are the different types of Loctite products?

Today, there are many different Loctite products available. They can be used on a wide variety of materials. Each reference has its own characteristics:

  • Instant glues/adhesives are used to quickly position and bond metal, plastic and rubber parts. They offer excellent adhesion
  • Fasteners are used to securely assemble and fasten bearings, bushings and cylindrical parts in many applications. It is a product that is suitable for heavy loads with uniform stress distribution. They can also bridge gaps to prevent loosening of parts, corrosion and shrinkage.
  • Threadlockers provide locking and sealing of threaded products while protecting them from vibration, corrosion and seizure. They are used to replace mechanical braking devices to reduce costs.
  • Thread sealants are mainly used to prevent gas and/or liquid leaks on metal and/or plastic threaded parts. These products are highly resistant to shocks and vibrations.
  • Flat sealants are used to fill gaps to prevent leakage and possible failure on flat metal and/or plastic parts. This product does not require re-tightening.

How to choose your Loctite brand product?

The choice of the product of this range will depend mainly on the type of technology desired. Indeed, the criteria will be different depending on whether you are looking for an adhesive, a threadlocker, a sealant, etc. For example:

  • Instant adhesives are chosen primarily for their application, viscosity, setting time and strength. The best sellers are the 401 and 454 adhesives. These references are designed for the assembly of materials (metals, plastics, and elastomers) that are difficult to glue.
  • Fastening products are primarily identified by the size of the gap to be bridged between parts, the strength and the temperatures to be withstood. The best sellers for fastening are Loctite 638 and Loctite 660. Loctite 638 can bridge a gap of up to 0.25mm and withstand temperatures up to 180°C. Loctite 660 can bridge a gap of up to 0.5mm and withstand temperatures up to 150°C.
  • In order to choose a thread locking solution, it is important to identify the desired strength. If you want the assembly to be permanent, the solution will be different from a removable assembly. Consistency and thermal resistance are also important. The best selling threadlockers are Loctite 243 and Loctite 270, which can be used on all metals and tolerate slight oil contamination. They can reach temperatures up to 180°. Loctite 243 is medium strength and can be disassembled while 270 is high strength.
  • For thread sealants, it is necessary to know the type of substrate the product will be used on (metal and/or plastic) as well as the type of thread and the consistency of the solution. The best sellers in this line of Loctite are Loctite 577 and 542. The 577 is used for general purpose applications. It provides an instant seal at temperatures up to 180°. It also allows for light surface contamination. It is recommended for coarse threads. Loctite 542 is used more for hydraulic and pneumatic metal pipes. It is recommended for fine threads.
  • Flat sealants are chosen according to the type of seal required. In particular, whether the desired parting line is rigid machined or flexible. The best sellers are Loctite 518 and Loctite SI 5910. Loctite 518 is a rigid machined parting line in iron, steel and aluminum. It has a high viscosity. Loctite SI 5910 is a flexible parting line. It has excellent resistance to engine oils.
